Sample Clue Instructions

The image above is a sample clue for you and your team to practice with in preparation for the Loomis Chaffee hunt on Thursday, April 19th. Solving this clue will help familiarize you with the format of the hunt, in which you will solving clues, locating answer tags, accessing the correct web page to view your next clue, and so on. By completing this clue now, you’ll be ready for competition on Thursday, when your team will be asked to solve a total of 12 such clues as fast as you can. Here are the steps to follow:

    1. Solve the clue. Look at the clue above – does it make you think of a particular place on campus? You need to try and figure out the location it is leading you to, which represents the solution to the clue. In a Rootles® hunt, clues will include any combination of visual elements, rhymes, ciphers, math puzzles, or anything else that makes them challenging. During the hunt, your group will have to solve these clues quickly, as each group gets the same clues, just in a different order.

    2. Locate the answer tag. You and your team members will need to explore the location on campus indicated in the clue solution. What you’re looking for is a little piece of paper – an “answer tag” – on which a series of three numbers are written, separated by forward slashes (example: 23/14/872). Each clue solution will lead to one distinct location, and each location will have one hidden answer tag.

    3. Write down the numbers listed on the answer tag, leave the answer tag where it is, and move on. You’ll need these numbers to access your next clue.

    4. Return to the web page with the original clue. At the bottom of the page, you will see a black box that says “NEXT CLUE.” By mousing over this box, you will reveal a series of three numbers.

    5. Add the numbers from the answer tag to those shown in the NEXT CLUE box to get the new URL to go to for your group’s next clue. For example, the numbers you will see when you mouse over NEXT CLUE in the sample above are 02/02/002. Lets say that you found an answer tag that read 23/14/872, then you should add these two to get 25/16/874. (Note: all these numbers are positive integers.)

    6. Use these numbers to change the URL of the web page in your browser to take you to the location of your next clue. So, using the example above, you would change the URL from: http://www.rootles.com/clients/loomis/01/01/001.html to http://www.rootles.com/clients/loomis/25/16/874.html (Just replace the three number in the address bar and hit “Go” or “Enter.”)

    7. Successfully following these steps for this sample clue will lead you to another page on the Rootles® site. Good luck!

On April 12th, groups will meet and receive their first clue. The hunt will follow the same format as above, just with more clues and the added challenge of competing with other teams. A copy of these instructions regarding the overall hunt will be provided on Thursday afternoon.
